Free Summer Dance Programs
For Children & Teens Who Qualify
For the 14th year in a row, CMDE is presenting in tuition-free summer dance programs for children and teens, with funding from the Bergen County Department of Human Services. Contact Elissa at CMDE, 201-342-2989, for information on applications and qualifications.
Joanne Koob-Brown, long time CMDE associate, noted choreographer and dance educator, will again direct Summer Star for Girls Camp, for agees 10-13, Monday-Friday 10:30am-2:30pm, August 2nd – August 13th. Dance educator Wakina Humphrey will assist during the two week program. The girls will have daily dance classes and learn choreography, as well as participating in crafts, drama, and music activities. The program will end with a free performance at 1:00 on August 12th at CMDE.
Roger Turner, CMDE faculty and Seventh Principle Performance Company member, will again direct the Summer Stars for Boys Camp, for ages 10-13, which will meet Monday-Friday 10:30am-2:30pm, August 16th-August 27th. Choreographer Jason Warley will co-teach the program, which includes various dance styles, craft projects, games, and music, with a free performance by the boys at CMDE on August 26th at 1:00 pm.
Summer Moves For Teens, co-ed and open to boys and girls ages 13-19 who love to dance, provides an intensive dance experience. It will be directed by teachers Janelle Smith-Reed and Roger Turner and will meet Monday-Thursday, 5pm-7pm, August 2- August 26. The teens will present free performances of original dances at CMDE on August 25th & 26th at 6:00.
Guest artists will teach dance workshops such as Hip-Hop, African Dance, Middle Eastern, Broadway, and Latin Dance at all three camps.
Students must be able to attend full sessions of each camp. Enrollment is first come first serve and is limited to 20 students for each camp.
The Center for Modern Dance Education is located in a wheelchair-accessible facility at 84 Euclid Avenue, Hackensack. The Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission to make dance available to every one, including people of all ages, individuals with disabilities, older adults, and youth at-risk.
